Description
Guided tour Pierre Berge-Yves Saint Laurent Foundation
** NOTE FROM THE PIERRE BERGE – YVES SAINT LAURENT FONDATION : « The library will be closed for renovation from 23rd April until 25th May 2012. » **
A guide will welcome you in the luxurious salons of the Foundation. You will start your tour by the exhibition "Kabuki" dedicated to japonese costume theatre. As a true privilege, you will enter the studio of the great designer, where each collection was born. Your guide will narrate 1001 anecdotes while presenting several original sketches on which you would be able to read the annotations of Mr. Saint Laurent destined for the workshop. Emblematic haute couture prototypes will also be unveiled for you. Finally, it is in the rich library before the bibles of the YSL collection, that you will understand the functioning of such a fashion house..
Yves Saint Laurent sensed, better than any other designer, the movements of society. If Chanel gave liberty to women, Saint Laurent gave them power. By making use of masculine codes, he brought women security and audacity whilst accentuating their feminity.
40 years after opening their haute couture fashion house, Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge decided to create a foundation to « transform these memories into projects ». The Foundation set itself 3 objectives : The conservation of 5000 haute couture garments and 15000 accessories, sketches…, the organisation of exhibitions on fashion, paintings, photographs… and the support of cultural and educational projects.
New Exhibition : Kabuki - Japanese Theatre Costumes, from 07/03/12 to 15/07/12.
Guided tours of Yves Saint Laurent's studio and library also available during off exhibition periods.

Chateau de Vincennes - Vincennes
Your guided tour of this jewel of French history will take you inside its fortified walls adorned with medieval towers, where you can visit the magnificent Holy Chapel which once housed a part of Christ’s cross and his crown of thorns. You will then embark for a tour of the highest conserved dungeon in Europe, wandering around the living quarters of King Charles V and of the jails where people as famous as the Marquis de Sade, Voltaire, Mirabeau and Diderot where held prisoners. A unique tour filled with historical anecdotes.
Built in its current form between the 14th and the 19th century, the Chateau de Vincennes is today one of the only important witnesses of medieval architecture in Paris. Formerly a hunting lodge used by Louis VII towards 1150, the castle underwent several transformations until Charles V made it his residence and the seat of his government. He also built the tower and the enclosure, whose work lasted two generations. Royal residence, home to kings and the French court during the Religious Wars and the Fronde, Vincennes then saw significant changes in the course of the XVIIth century.

Lido de Paris - Paris
Way before the birth of the great cabarets in France, the tradition of the « cafe concert » broke the social barriers of a time through popular cultural entertainment in a cafe ambience. Inspired by this tradition and by that of Music Hall, the Clerico brothers opened the Lido on the Champs-Elysees in 1946. Thus was invented the now famous dinner show format, and the revues followed, each more spectacular than the previous one. The cabaret was reinvented and the legend of Paris nightlife was created.
Don’t judge a book by its cover! Behind this cheery, superficial Parisian image of the Lido lies an extremely complex organisation. The backstage tour of this legendary cabaret will take you where few people go, into the costume rooms full of flamboyant costumes, reserved for its dancers, costume designers and makeup artists. Your guided tour will then show you around the building with its unique architecture. You will be stunned by the complex set of pulleys, plates and giant elevators used to widen the stage and transform the sets. It’s simply magical! Who would resist the temptation of the dinner show after such an exciting visit?

Opera Garnier - Paris
In 1860, a contest was launched for the construction of a new opera house in Paris. It was young architect Charles Garnier's project that was unanimously adopted for its exuberant mix of ostentatious and eclectic baroque architecture. Today, the Palais Garnier undoubtedly embodies the architecture that best represents the art of the Second Empire, and stands as a symbol of the luxury and pleasures of the French capital. 73 sculptors and 14 painters worked on it until its inauguration in January 1875. Measuring 172m in length and 124m in breadth, the Opera Garnier is the largest opera house in Europe, with the capacity to welcome more than 2000 people.
Led by a tour guide, you will be amazed by the rich architecture and decor of the Palais Garnier. Your visit will begin with the “Rotonde des Abonnes” (Members’ Rotunda) which was formerly used to welcome the audience, and where you will be able to discover the unique signature of the architect Charles Garnier amongst the arabesques. The mysterious Prophetess Pythia will greet you before you take the majestic “Grand Escalier” (Main Staircase), which brings you to the auditorium, the lounges and the foyers. The abundant decor, the splendour of the various foyers and the variety of materials used will take your breath away. The numerous paintings and sculptures allow the Palais Garnier to be not only a theatre but also a museum at the same time.
The Palais Garnier, being a show site, for technical or artistic reasons, we cannot guarantee systematic access to the Auditorium. In this case, a ticket valid for 1 year on an unguided tour will be offered as compensation by the Opera Garnier.
