Exhibition Picasso et la guerre after closing time

Les Invalides – Army Museum
Exhibition Picasso et la guerre (Picasso and War Exhibition)
From 5th April 2019 — 28th July 2019

Discover the Picasso et la guerre Exhibition at the Musée de l'Armée-Invalides in the evening as part of a guided tour, after public opening hours.

With your guide, you'll take a chronological approach in exploring the major conflicts which marked the 20th century - World Wars One & Two, the Spanish Civil War, conflicts linked to global decolonisation, and the Cold War - through the eyes of Pablo Picasso.

As part of the tour, the exhibition features the artist's personal archives as well as his most iconic works, including The Orator, The Weeping Woman, War and Peace and Massacre in Korea, as well as objects and documents which further contextualise the artist's masterpieces.

Your guide will help you gain insight into the artist's outlook on war, and how his symbolic representations of conflict evolved through his work. Although war rarely featured in his early works, or even at all in the case of the First World War, the Spanish Civil War and the bombing of Guernica marked a turning point in his relationship with conflict; indeed, these events were the beginning of his engagement with social issues. A notable feature of the exhibition is a full-scale reproduction of Guernica.

In the Second World War, his art, which clashed with conservative values, was labelled "degenerate" by the Nazis. During the Axis occupation of France, he continued living in Paris, albeit leading a hidden life largely confined to his studio. The Liberation paved the way for his post-war success. For the first time, he set out on dedicating his art to the political cause, with the aim of promoting peace after years of conflict. His dove motif remains an internationally-recognised symbol for peace today.
