Cultival offers you an exceptional guided tour where you can go behind the scenes of the famous Manufacture des Gobelins. Your guide will open the doors of this place steeped in history where you will be able to admire the fascinating work of the tapestry weavers.
On site, you will visit one of the three operating studios and witness first-hand the creation of works, sometimes of monumental dimensions, by the artist-technicians. Each site is home to a unique expertise: the Beauvais Manufactory specialises in the making of tapestries on low looms (horizontally) while the Gobelins Manufactory is famous for its tapestries created on high looms (vertically). Finally, the Savonnerie Manufactory is renowned for its carpet-making on high looms.
From the history of the place to modern weaving techniques, your guide will unveil the secrets of this very special craft and will introduce you to the tools used daily by the weavers: pattern, spindle, comb, shuttle, mirror... all the many objects used by these artists throughout the process of creating a piece of work.
How many artist-technicians are needed for one piece of work? When is a tapestry officially completed? How long does the creation process take? How does one become a tapestry weaver? From a general presentation of the manufactory to the vocabulary used in the workshops, your guide will answer all your questions and help you discover this magnificent French craftsmanship, whose creations are exported all over the world.
