The masterpieces of Notre-Dame and the fire of 15 April 2019: what conservation challenges were faced in restoring these major works?

In this new exhibition, you will discover all the work carried out over the last five years to restore the masterpieces of the building's interior decoration, i.e. twenty-one large-format paintings, including thirteen large "Mays".

Among the major works are ensembles created by some of the greatest painters of the 17th century, including Charles Le Brun, Laurent de La Hyre and Charles Poerson. These paintings will be shown to the public for the first time in two centuries in the same scenography, before being reinstalled in the cathedral.
The work carried out to rethink the cathedral's interior décor is also illustrated by the contribution of the Mobilier National, on the restoration of the monumental choir carpet donated by Charles X. The new liturgical furniture and seating, the result of a competition launched by the Diocese of Paris in 2023, will be presented to the public.

This exhibition highlights the technical and scientific expertise of the teams of restorers and the Centre de recherche et de restauration des musées de France (C2RMF) who helped restore the pieces on display. These ensembles, presented in a new light, will enable you to appreciate the full richness of the cathedral's decor.
